Finding Core Value of Teamwork through Playing LEGO

Every time in life, we always connect to other people. Human is well known as "Social creature" because we always need other people in our daily life. For example, when we want to build a house, we can't build it alone. Our capability as a human is limited, we can't prepare the wood by ourselves by cutting the trees directly from the forest, prepare the brick alone composed from the clay, etc. Even if we can do it by ourselves, surely it will need a very long time. Similar to achieve the goals, to make it faster and easier we need to do this together, by TEAMWORK.

Teamwork is an activity to realize the dream and achieve the goals together. Teamwork gains the performance from the different skills and talents to achieve goals well. Analogous with an African proverb about the value of teamwork said, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together". Different from individual work, teamwork enables every member to contribute more in order to get bigger and larger impact of achievement.

By the way, we aware that many differences within the team during the teamwork process. Those differences may sometime create contention, etc. That's why to establish a good climate of teamwork, we should try to apply some core values about teamwork. On 13 September 2018 ago, I got the chance to attend In Country Seminar of Cargill Global Scholarship that held in Jakarta. In the first day of the event, I got 10 explanation about core values of Cargill as a company. Then, after we heard every explanation of each value such as transparency, integrity, honesty, respect, etc, the participant must choose the top 5 of the most important values from those 10. After choosing that, the master of ceremony asked every group representative to choose the Lego on the table. Randomly, I take the Lego of a historical building named "Lincoln Memorial". Then, the master of the ceremony said and command us to finish that Lego to be an intact miniature with only 10 minutes. Quickly, I with my team unboxed that Lego box and we try to understand the rules and procedures. After that, I with my friends have divided our roles to finish this Lego. I was the director, my friends as the installer. We work focus surrounded by laugh resonant around us. We tried this step by step until it finished about 80 % because the time was out. Unpredictable, our group was the fastest group to did this almost done.

This is our Lego miniature. Actually this is not finish yet, but we are the fastest group to make it almost done about 80%.

After this activity, the master of ceremony asked us to choose the three most important values in the teamwork. After analyzing from our top 5 values, we decide to choose humor, creativity, and respect.
  • Respect is an essential requirement to establish the strong performance of teamwork, by respect others, we also help them to be more effective when working with us.
  • Second is creativity. Creativity is needed to look for every alternative within hard problems and challenges with a better way. That's why we choose creativity as our top goals.
  • The third is humor. Don't forget to be happy is true, and humor also able to release the tension during the teamwork.

Evidently, we need aware that a good team needs a good understanding of the core values that we want to be implemented. Those core values if we able to cultivate them in our team, it will significantly enhance the performance of the group. Evidently, by playing Lego we can find this essential values! Learning while playing.
Oke friends, I hope that those my experiences can be useful for you. Keep spirit!

Humor. Respect. Creative.
